Walk Like an Egyptian: Peridot Birthstone

August Birthstone: Peridot

It is hard to believe that it is already August and that fall is just around the corner. Summer went by very quickly and some of us might have mixed feelings about it. At Spirit Lake SIlver and Gold, we are excited about one thing that August brings and that is PERIDOT! Yes, Peridot is the birthstone for this month. Here are some facts that you might not know about Peridot:

In the Ancient time Egypt was where Peridot was primarily found. The Egyptians called the gem “Gem of the Sun.”

Cleopatra was famous for wearing Peridot. It use to be said that she would be seen wearing emeralds but later it was found that the gemstone she was wearing was peridot. So you could say it is a gemstone fit for a queen!

Egypt might have been where the Peridot was found but now it is mined all over the world! Some of the places where Peridot is now mined are in America like Hawaii, Arkansas, Nevada and Arizona. Other places include Australia, China and Brazil.

In Hawaiian culture, it is believed that the stone symbolizes the Goddess Pele’s tears.

The most famous Peridot is located at the Smithsonian Museum and is 46.16 carats. The next biggest Peridot is a 34.65 carat pendant which was mined in Arizona.
